Kumta:
3 Childrens were killed and 7 people were seriously injured after massive landslide which occurred near Divgi NH66 in Kumta on 11th June, Sunday morning. The deceased have been identified as Dhanush Ambiga (01), Yateen Ambiga (07) and Bhavya Ambiga (08). Due to heavy rains the hilly part across the national highway collapsed and fell on nearby houses in which 7 houses completely collapsed and other five houses received a portion of damage. Injured people were taken to Govt hospital. Traffic was blocked instantly after this incident. Earth mover machines were brought on the place to clear up the mess. Even Police and fire brigade were on the spot. The widening works for the four lanes of NH-66 are going on in the area, rocks have become loose due to this and thus resulted to this landslide. People blame IRB company for their negligence towards providing sufficient safety precautions during the construction work of highway. It is being said that the company is undertaking the work in a risky and non scientific way without proper precautions. As a result -people say- the region has become more prone to landslides as evident by the recent incidents. Apart from Kumta’s tragedy, another landslide near the Ottinene Ghats in Byndoor had caused the highway to be blocked till 5 hours. People started to protest for providing some solution to deceased families, they even gave death threats to IRB officials. District commissioner who was on the spot, said that he figure out the solution for this problem.
