The Union Health Ministry asked the state governments to develop a system where tobacco products selling shops would require authorization from local municipal bodies. Ministry also says that shops which sell tobacco products shouldn’t be allowed to sell other non-tobacco products like candy, chocolates, cold drinks, and so on.
The authorization is to make sure that the local municipal bodies know the exact location of the shops and make sure they’re not within 100 yards of an educational institute based the ‘The Cigarette and Other Tobacco Products Act, 2003’ . Selling tobacco products, including cigarettes, to a person under 18 years of age is considered an offence.
Keeping candy, chocolates, cold drinks at cigarette shops encourage children towards smoking and consuming other tobacco products. The Union Health Ministry is trying to make sure children are kept away from smoking and tobacco consumption.
